Applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain: A Checklist

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is the gateway to permanent settlement in the United Kingdom. It removes the time limit on your stay and, after a further qualifying period, opens the route to British citizenship.

The Basic Requirements

  • Partner route: Usually five years of continuous leave as a partner. Requirements vary depending on your visa route and entry date — verify the current qualifying period at gov.uk before applying.
  • Skilled Worker route: Five years of continuous employment with a licensed sponsor at the qualifying salary threshold.
  • Long residence: Ten years of continuous lawful residence in the UK.

The Life in the UK Test

Most adult applicants must pass the Life in the UK test. You must book and pass the test before submitting your ILR application. The certificate remains valid permanently once issued.

The Document Checklist

Valid passport and all previous passports held since you entered the UK, Biometric Residence Permit if issued, Life in the UK test pass notification, English language evidence, evidence of continuous residence, absence calculation, and for partner applications ongoing evidence of the relationship covering the full qualifying period.

Getting the Application Right

The application fee is substantial. Always check the current ILR application fee on the UK Visas and Immigration website before applying — fees change and are not refunded on refusal.
