What to Do If Your UK Visa Application is Refused
A visa refusal is not the end. This guide explains your options after a UK visa refusal — administrative review, appeal to the First-tier Tribunal, fresh application, and acting within the time limits.
What to Do If Your UK Visa Application is Refused
A visa refusal is not the end. Depending on the type of application and the reasons for refusal, you may be able to appeal, request an administrative review, or make a fresh application.
Administrative Review
If you applied from outside the UK on a Points-Based System route or a sponsored route, you may be able to request an administrative review within twenty-eight days.
Appeal to the First-tier Tribunal
Many immigration decisions carry a right of appeal to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber). Spouse and partner visa refusals almost always carry an appeal right.
Fresh Application
If the refusal was based on insufficient evidence rather than a legal error, a fresh application with better evidence is often the most direct route forward.
Timelines
Rights of appeal and administrative review have strict deadlines, typically fourteen to twenty-eight days from the date of the decision. Missing a deadline can remove your right to challenge the decision entirely.
