What you get

Barristers are specialists in the law itself and in arguing it. That is the help you need when the rules are unclear or the stakes are high.

A considered view on how the law applies to your facts, that you, your board or your accountant can rely on when deciding what to do.

Advice on HMRC letters, information requests, assessments and penalties, and on how to answer them, including statutory reviews.

Preparing and presenting appeals to the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber). Advocacy is what Barristers are trained for.

Through Direct Access you can instruct the Barrister yourself, without first going through a Solicitor.

Bring in specialist opinion or advocacy for a client while you stay their day-to-day adviser.

How it works

  1. The property or issue, the structure, and anything HMRC has sent. Our team turns it into a clear brief.

  2. A Barrister with the right tax expertise looks at the brief. You receive a single fixed fee in writing.

  3. Nothing is owed until you say yes. If you go ahead, you work directly with your Barrister and our team stays on hand.

Do I need an accountant as well as a Barrister?

Often, yes, and the two work well together. Your accountant prepares accounts and returns; the Barrister advises on how the law applies where the answer is uncertain or disputed, and represents you if it reaches a Tribunal. Many of our tax enquiries come from accountants on behalf of their clients.

Can I instruct a tax Barrister without a Solicitor?

Yes. Under the Direct Access scheme, members of the public and businesses can instruct a Barrister directly for advice, drafting and representation, including at the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber).

How are fees set?

You receive a single fixed fee in writing for the agreed work before anything starts. There is no hourly billing and no obligation to proceed after the quote.
